Genuine Sapphire
Sapphire, the color of the heavens, has historically symbolized truth and innocence. It was believed to attract divine favor to its owner. Used as a talisman, sapphire was thought to protect travelers, fend off illness, and bring peace, joy, wisdom, and prosperity. September’s birthstone, sapphire is also a suggested gift for the fifth or 45th wedding anniversary. A member of the corundum mineral family, sapphire and its sister ruby are the hardest gems after diamond, ranking 9 on the Moh’s scale. Although the name is derived from the Latin word for blue, sapphirus, sapphire is found in virtually every color including colorless, white, gray and black, but not red (that’s ruby). Fancy color sapphire is found in various shades of yellow, peach, orange, cognac, pink, violet, purple, and green. Sapphire is found in many parts of the world, but the most prized gems are from Kashmir, Burma, and Sri Lanka. Other areas include Australia, Thailand, Cambodia, Tanzania, Madagascar, and the United States.
